Setting up the HDHomeRun
The HDHomeRun works by providing live TV to your home computer network from over-the-air TV broadcasts using an antenna (or from a cable TV provider if they support CableCARD, DVB-C, or clearQAM). This allows you to use your own devices in your home, such as phones, tablets, laptops, computers, set top boxes, smart TVs, and more, to watch live TV.
Quick start guide
* One HDHomeRun can be accessed from the entire home network/wifi
* Each home can have multiple HDHomeRun units
* If you have multiple units then the HDHomeRun app will automatically consolidate them into one seamless channel list
1. Connect your HDHomeRun
* **I have a working antenna and am happy with the reception I receive:**
* Connect the HDHomeRun to the antenna using the coaxial connector. Hand tighten only. Then proceed to **step 2**.
* **I need help with the antenna**
* See our **Antenna Selection Guide here**
* See our **Antenna Alignment Guide here**
Connect to your network or home router using the provided ethernet cable.
* If you can connect the HDHomeRun easily to your home router using a wired (ethernet) cable, do so and proceed to **step 3**.
* If you cannot easily connect the HDHomeRun using a wired connection, please see **here for ideas on how to connect it**
* If you have connected the HDhomeRun to your home router, but are having issues, see our **Network Troubleshooting Guide here**
Connect the power adapter. The green ethernet light should power on. Proceed to **step 4**.
You can scan for channels using the HDHomeRun app (see links below) or by using the web interface:
- In a web browser that is on the same local network as the HDHomeRun (your PC, phone, tablet, etc), go to this address: **http://hdhomerun.local/lineup.html**
- Click on **"Detect Channels"**
- You can also hide or "Favorite" channels from this page. Click the gray star next to a channel number once to make it a "Favorite", then click it again to "Blacklist" the channel from the HDHomeRun app. Click again if you wish to return a channel to the default gray star (no setting).
2. Download the HDHomeRun app for your devices
3. Optional DVR
SiliconDust offers our own **DVR service**, and the HDHomeRun hardware will also work with a number of third party DVR programs and services.
* **The SiliconDust HDHomeRun DVR** service is $35 USD per year and offers a quick and easy way to get started recording live TV. A subscription is only needed to make new recordings, and any existing recordings made by the HDHomeRun DVR does not need a subscription in order to be played back. For details see our **DVR guide**
* **Third party DVR options** do not require any subscription or fee from SiliconDust. Some options may require their own subscription or payment, but free options also exist for those who don't mind setting up additional software or hardware. You can find some of these options here: **third party applications**
The web interface
To perform channel scans, hide channels, update firmware, and more, you can use the HDHomeRun's web page interface. While connected to the same local network as your HDHomeRun, open this link in a web browser:
NOTE: That address will go do the first HDHomeRun device found on your network. If you have more than one HDHomeRun device then you would use the "device ID" printed on the bottom of the unit instead of "hdhomerun" in the address. For example, if your device ID was 104FFFFF then you would go to http://104fffff.local
For more information about the web interface, see **webui**.
